Dinner lived up to my expectations. Bart cooked better than he baked. The marinara was so thick, I could scoop it with my fork. It clung to the spaghetti and flavor exploded in my mouth with every bite. I’d grown up with sauce from a jar, and there was no comparison.

When dinner ended, Bart was dragging. I ignored his protests and helped him clear the table. His objections to my washing the pots had less strength, and he didn’t say anything when I helped him put everything away.

We took our wine into the living room, and Bart put on some soft jazz. He surprised me by sitting on the couch only a few inches away. His hand touched mine, and I expected him to pull it back like it was on fire, but he left it there. Soon his thumb moved slowly over my pinky.

I should have moved my hand. Bart hadn’t resolved his conflict; this was playing with matches standing in a puddle of gasoline. Nothing good could come of this. But I stayed still.

Unlike anyone else I’d ever fallen for, Bart and I had started with sex. Great sex. The hour or so we spent talking was different, too, but I was still thinking hookup when we left the diner. Somewhere between there and orgasm, we both decided we wanted more. With each new bit of information Bart gave me, I plunged deeper into my desire to be with him.

I’d been good, despite wanting Bart with a need I hardly recognized. I pretended all our lunch dates weren’t dates. That his incredibly kind fresh air glyph was just a welcome gift and hadn’t taken days to create. I even ignored the instant boner he got when I fell on top of him at creative kickball. All because he asked that we not cross a line.

With every swipe of his thumb, however, he erased part of the divide between us. I spread my fingers and my heart pounded harder when he slipped his between them. Squeezing them together, I pulled his hand up and pressed the back to my lips. I wanted to blow a hole in that line too big to ever be closed.

Bart had his attention fixed on our hands. He bit his lower lip and glanced at me from the corner of his eye. I winked and he gave me a lazy smile before resting his head on my shoulder.

I freed my hand and put my arm around him. Bart snuggled in and sighed as I adjusted my position to make it more comfortable. With my free hand, I stroked his hair. He purred under me and cuddled closer. It was easily the most intimate moment I’d experienced in my dating life. Tender, warm, and simple. There was no urgency. It felt so natural.

“This feels amazing,” he said in a soft, dreamy voice. “I’m going to fall asleep if you keep doing that.”

This moment eviscerated the boundaries between us with a totality sex couldn’t. We’d connected on a deeper level than carnal need could delve.
